Why do we change the clocks?

Understand coordination, historical energy arguments, uncertain modern savings, and the role of sleep and morning light.

Coordination and an energy argument

Uniform schedules reduced confusion between communities using different seasonal rules. Saving lighting energy was an important historical argument for daylight saving time. DOT and BTS history.

Energy savings are not a promise

The Department of Energy evaluated the 2007 seasonal extension and found small electricity savings. That study does not establish the effect of permanent winter DST. Climate, heating, cooling and behavior affect results. Read the 2008 DOE report.

Sleep and morning light matter

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine supports ending clock changes in favor of permanent standard time. Its rationale emphasizes alignment with human circadian rhythms and morning light. We support permanent DST, but do not present that preference as medical consensus. AASM position.

Abolishing changes does not choose the setting

People who agree on ending transitions can disagree about permanent DST versus permanent standard time. Consider early commutes, school schedules and evening activities together. See the clock tradeoff.
